Werden Suiseki in Suiban präsentiert oder ausgestellt, dann ist es wichtig, daß sie unterhalb der Augenhöhe in einem Regal, auf einem Tisch oder im Tokonoma stehen, damit man in die Schale hineinschauen kann und damit die erstrebte Weite der Ebene oder des Ozeans sichtbar wird. Wird dies nicht beachtet, so geht der ganze Symbolgehalt der Präsentation verloren.
Dagegen habe ich schon oft erlebt, daß mit Dai ausgestattete Suiseki auch im asiatischen Raum zu niedrig ausgestellt wurden. Ein Bonsaitisch mit hohen Beinen bringt die Suiseki zwar nicht in Augenhöhe, aber sie sind für den Betrachter schon wesentlich besser platziert. Gerade solche Suiseki sollten unter einem Betrachtungswinkel von 10°…20° angesehen werden.

For a display or exhibition of suiseki in suiban it is important that they are placed below eye level on a shelf, a table or in a tokonoma so that the viewer can look into the pot and see the wide plain or ocean that it symbolizes. If this is neglected the symbolic contents of the display are lost.

On the other hand, I often saw suiseki displayed in a dai which were placed too low, even in Asian countries. A bonsai table with high legs can place suiseki much better, even it they are not really at eye level. Especially these Suiseki should be viewed from an angle of 10° - 20°.

Suiseki mit Dai sollten unter einem Blickwinkel zwischen 0° und 20° angesehen werden, damit man die Suggestivwirkung des Steins richtig erfassen kann.
Neben der zuvor erwähnten Art Suiseki zu präsentieren, gibt es noch die selten angewandte Möglichkeit, Suiseki in eine mit verschiedenen niederen Moosarten ausgekleideten Schale zu stellen, ähnlich einem japanischen Moosgarten. Als weitere Variante kann man Teile der Schalenbodenfläche mit Moos bedecken, während der Rest des Schalenbodens mit einem farblich zum Moos passenden Granulat ausgelegt wird.

An alternative to the display method mentioned above is to place the suiseki in a pot filled with various species of short moss, similar to a Japanese moss garden. A variant of this is to cover a part of the pot’s base with moss and fill the rest with granules of a colour that corresponds to the moss.

Suiban sind wasserdichte Keramik – und Bronzeschalen zur Präsentation von Suiseki. Alle Maße sind in Zentimeter angegeben. Bei den Höhenmaßen sind die Schalenfüße mit in die Höhe einbezogen.

Measurements of bronze and ceramic pots (japanese: suiban)

Suiban are water-tight ceramic and bronze pots for displaying suiseki. All measurements in cm. The height includes the feet of  the pots.

Maßhinweise für rechteckige Suiban. Für ovale Suiban gibt man auch die Maße für dieLänge l, die Breite b und Höhe h in ähnlicher Weise an.

Measurements for rectangular suiban. For oval suiban the measurements are specified in a similar way as length l, width w and height h.

a) Keramikschalen / a) Ceramic pots

b) Bronzeschalen / b) Bronze Pots

Die Höhe der Schalenfüße liegt zwischen 3 mm und 10 mm. Bei der Wahl der Schale (Suiban) sollte das Verhältnis von Höhe des Steins zur Höhe des Schalenrandes etwa 4 zu 1 bis 10 zu 1 betragen; d.h. der Stein ist 4- bis 10- mal höher als der Schalenrand.
Für das Längenverhältnis von Suiban zu Stein gilt 2 zu 1 bis etwa 2,5 zu 1.
Wird die Schale auf einen Tisch oder ein Bord gestellt, dann sollte das Höhenverhältnis von Tisch zu Suiseki bei etwa 2 zu 1 bis 8 zu 1 liegen; d.h. der Tisch ist etwa 2 bis 8 mal höher als der Suiseki. Die Tischlänge richtet sich nach der Schalenlänge.
Ideal st ein Längenverhältnis von Tisch zu Schale von 1,5 zu 1 bis 2 zu 1.

The height of the pots’ feet is between 3 mm and 10 mm. When choosing a suiban, the relation of the stone’s height to the height of the pot’s wall should be about 4 : 1 to 10 : 1, which means that the stone is four to ten times higher than the pot’s wall. The relation of the suiban’s length to the stone’s length should be 2 : 1 to 2.5 : 1.

If the pot is placed on a table or board the relation of the table height to the suiseki’s should be between 2 : 1 and 8 : 1, which means the table should be two to eight times higher than the suiseki. 

Bei der Wahl eines Tisches richtet sich die Länge des Tisches nach der Länge der Suisekischale. Der Tisch sollte ungefähr 1,5- bis 2- mal länger sein als die Schale.
Wird eine Schale auf eine Reisigmatte oder ein Wurzelholzbrett gestellt, dann sollte die Reisigmatte oder das Brett mindestens 15% bis 30% größer als die Schale sein.

The length of the table depends on the length of the pot; the table should be 1.5 to 2 times longer than the pot.
If the pot is placed on a reed mat or a wooden slab, this should be at least 15% to 30% longer than the pot.

Eindruck einer großen Weite (Collection of Ryuseki Nakayama). Der Stein gehört nach der Klassifikation zu den Slope stones.

„Black is beautiful“ ist ein guter Name für diesen tiefschwarzen Stein mit einem Farbstich ins Blaue. Der bei Padang auf West-Sumatra gefundene Stein steht in einem Suiban von Peter Krebs. Steine aus dieser Gegend sind für ihre gute Qualität bekannt und werden von Koreanern, Taiwanesen und Japanern sehr geschätzt. Maße: 26cm x 14 cm x 20 cm.

“Black is beautiful” would be a good name for this deeply black stone with a shade of blue. The stone found near Padang on West-Sumatra is placed in a suiban by Peter Krebs. Stones from this area are known for their good quality and are highly appreciated by Korean, Taiwanese and Japanese collectors. Measurements: 26cm x 14 cm x 20 cm.

Der 19 cm breite Wasserbeckenstein wurde in Java gefunden. Der Krebs an seiner Seite suggeriert Wasser selbst dann, wenn der Stein nicht mit Wasser gefüllt ist.

This 19 cm long  water basin stone was found in Java. The crab by its side suggests water even when the stone is not filled with water.

Die „Insel der tausend Blumen“ liegt in einem von Peter Krebs gefertigten Suiban (Keramikschale). Der Stein wurde im Roten Fluß (Südchina) in 20 m Tiefe gefunden.
Maße: 38 cm x 15 cm x 18 cm.

The “Island of the thousand Flowers” is placed in a ceramic suiban by Peter Krebs. The stone was found in the Red River (south China) in a depth of 20 m. Measurements: 38 cm x 15 cm x 18 cm.

“Causse Noire” ist ebenfalls ein Stein aus Ligurien, Italien. Er liegt in einem von Peter Krebs gefertigten Suiban. Maße: 36 cm x 10 cm x 8 cm.

“Causse Noire” is another stone from Liguria, Italy. It is placed in a suiban by Peter Krebs. Measurements: 36 cm x 10 cm x 8 cm.

„Grüne Insel der tausend Höhlen“. Die Bezeichnung „tausend“ ist in vielen Gegenden Asiens gleichbedeutend mit „viel“. Es ist ein Inselstein aus Serpentin von sehr guter Qualität in einem Suiban aus Tokonome, Japan. Fundort: Sumatra; Maße: 33 cm x 22 cm x 14 cm.

“Green Island of the Thousand Caves”. In many Asian countries the term “thousand” just means “a lot”. This is an island stone, serpentin material, of very good quality in a suiban from Tokonome, Japan. Found in Sumatra; Measurements: 33 cm x 22 cm x 14 cm.

Hier noch einige schöne Doban.

„Heiliger Batursee“ (Bali) ist ein Landschaftsstein von ausgezeichneter Qualität. Die Vertiefung im Stein kann mit Wasser gefüllt werden und symbolisiert den Heiligen See. Der Stein liegt in einem alten japanischen Doban. Maße: 23 cm x 16 cm x 10 cm.

“Holy Lake of Batur” (Bali) is a landscape stone of excellent quality. The cavity in the stone can be filled with water and symbolizes the holy lake. The stone is placed in an old doban. Measurements: 23 cm x 16 cm x 10 cm.

Ein besonders schöner schwarzer Stein mit braunen Zeichnungen in einem mit weißem Granulat gefüllten Suiban aus Bronze. Solche edle Bronzeschalen werden in der Regel auch nur für „edle Steine“ verwendet. Man beachte den kleinen Tunnel unten etwas rechts von der Mitte (Sammlung Paiman/Jakarta).

„Wasser des Lebens“ beschreibt diesen Wasserbeckenstein in einem koreanischen Doban (Bronzeschale) in idealer Weise. Der Stein stammt aus Sumatra. Maße: 20 cm x 15 cm x 9 cm.
